How to Recognize Victims Hiding in Plain Sight
Recognizing victims of human trafficking is a science. It can be learned. Discover how to recognize the early signs that something odd is going on in front of your very eyes.
Human trafficking is a crime that is often hidden in plain sight. Victims can be found in all walks of life, from the streets to our own homes. They may be young or old, male or female, and from any socioeconomic background.
It is important to be aware of the signs of domestic violence so that we can help to identify and rescue victims. Some of the common signs include:
Physical signs of abuse: These can include bruises, cuts, burns, or other injuries.
Controlling behavior: The trafficker may control the victim's movements, finances, or access to outside contact.
Isolation: The victim may be isolated from family, friends, or other support systems.
Fear: The victim may be afraid to speak out or to leave the trafficker.
Changes in behavior: The victim may exhibit changes in behavior, such as becoming withdrawn, depressed, or anxious.
If you suspect that someone is a victim of human trafficking, please contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text HELP or INFO to BeFree (233733).
You can also report suspected cases of human trafficking to law enforcement.
By being aware of the signs and reporting suspected cases, you can help to rescue victims and bring traffickers to justice.
